If you are in hospital for more than 24 hours, you can request direct billing so that you do not have to pay up front. For other treatment, you pay and are then reimbursed on presentation of supporting documents.
It is best to take out cover before you leave: no waiting period then applies. You can still take out cover after departure, with an 8-day waiting period. For the cancellation option, you must take out cover on the day you book your trip, and no later than 48 hours afterwards.
As soon as you take out the policy, you receive your insurance certificate and all the policy documentation by email. For the Globe Traveller policy, this document must be printed, dated and signed: it then serves as proof that you are insured with ACS. If it does not arrive, check your junk mail or contact an ACS Customer Service Advisor.
The following are excluded: accidents or illnesses occurring or contracted while taking part in, or training for, official matches or competitions organised by a sporting federation, along with sporting activity carried out professionally and the consequences of the following sports and activities (unless the High-risk sports option was selected when you took out the policy): bobsleigh, skeleton, mountaineering, competitive luge, air sports with the exception of parasailing, jet-skiing, combat sports, off-piste snow sports and scuba diving. The full list appears in your general terms and conditions.
Yes, this is very often possible.
Please note that the Globe Traveller policy does not cover the consequences of conditions or illnesses that existed before the policy start date. It does, however, cover you for all the other risks insured under the policy that are unrelated to your medical history.
Some conditions must be declared to our Medical Advisor before you take out cover. If you have one of them (they are listed during the online application), contact our Medical Advisor and give as much detail as you can about your condition, including symptoms, diagnosis and treatment. They can then review your request and tell you whether cover is possible, and on what terms.
